The toughest hurdle for the best call I had...RGIIMS...

The interview was on 10th March at IISWBM, Kolkata...

Reached there around half 8...the process started at dot 9 with the attendance being taken first..soon afterwards we were called out by our respective panel prof for the GD..

Out of a total of 9 candidates in our GD group, 2 were absent...so left with 7...orginally numbered 9, I was the last member....(and how it tested my patience and stamina while waiting for PI... I guess the IIM-S PI has been the longest faced by me...a lil less than disaster too...)

Anyways the GD was a case study...n I'm sure it was repeated...bcoz i had read it somewhere in pagalguy...abt a driver named Chandu Singh...how he worked hard n honestly in company for 15 years and is now the driver for MD...and accidentally kills a gal while he was taking the car to his home after dropping MD (which is a violation of company rules...)...The court has exonerated him for the death of the gal due to lack of evidence but the internal panel of the company found him guilty of breaking company's rule n sugested his dismissal...what should the MD do...

The GD was for 15 min i guess...(see how quick I'm in trying to forget bad experiences )
Anyways we all discussed few points...nothin much innovative...I can't say I did well..bcoz I took out the point of morality of Chandu Singh which was completely rejected by the rest of the members...other than that pitched in 3-4 times with lil points here n there...fine but not the best GD I have seen...anyways no fish market (because I guess anyone of us hardly had anythin to speak on the topic after first 5 min...)
The moderators were just not stopping us...so a guy from our group (I was the only gal inbetween 6 other guy + 3 male mods) started concluding...jotted down main points...
Then we were given 5 minute to jot down the main points of the discussion...on things that the group agreed as a whole n not just our personal views...seemed like just 2-3 min had passed when we were asked to give back the paper....

Anyways...now comes the intezar part...the PI started immediately and the prof were same as the mods of GD...one was young the other two quiet old...no idea who they were though...
Each interview lasted between 20 min to half hour...so that made my wait last around 3 hours...had a lil chit chat with rest of the people in that...the only points I can mention are...the GD topic was same across all groups and the panels were asking anythin under the sun in PI...right from tech to personal to current issues, to geography...seamless I can say...

Anyways my turn came around half 12...was ushered in by the youngest prof...he was sitting in the middle...the other two on either sides...they were on across the U table, and I was seated on the chair between the U table... (and the slaughter began...)

It started with technical stuff...trust IIM for that (just wondering y I wasn't ever questioned abt techs in IITs...role reversal somethin??)
The youngest prof, P1 lets say...asked me what is TFT...okie, I'm dumb..didn't click at first...but managed later on...till he asked me its construction??? (Hello I'm a CSE student...not ETC one)

Then came programming...asked me the inbuilt function for sorting in C (does it exist??? I don't know...till date all programmings I did..had no such thing...anyways..) then asked me to write the concept of a sorting...I asked which algorithm...and was rebuked...asked the concept of sorting...not algorithm ( :??)

Anyways started explaining how sorting is done n all...was in a way discussing selection sort with him...and then he asked me to write the code for the algorithm...started writing it...he stopped me midway while I had entered the second loop...

And then another bomb on me (just to prove I'm dumb and what not...) asked me about swapping...told him something..and he said swap two numbers using pointers...(I can kick myself...but I was blank that time...and trust me, I know I can find the answer in Google but I've asked this question with 3 more supposed toppers of CS/IT...and all drew blank...but then it was asked to me...not to them..)

And as the prize I got the sarcastic comment, that he isn't from CSE so he has no idea how its done, but me being me should have known...(pehle batate nahi pata hai...kuch bhi likh deti with *s and &s...)

The one of the elder prof, P2 came in picture...he started asking me about my family...guessed by bro is workin abroad...told him my sis is abroad too...and he started asking me what do they tell me about the situation outside (common they are ages older than me...decades actually...so they don't discuss their works with me...khair...)...told him a lil about recession..this n that...he seemed totally unsatisfied...

Asked about my dad...told him he works in a bank...then asked me ki speak about his bank...(uff...I know its very much expected...par y to me...) anyways..told him for about a minute or two...then he started asking question if its private or not...when were the issues launched...who is this who is that...and the disaster here came when he asked what's the full form of IPO (now seriously...my leg isn't reaching my face...but kick me...)...I drew blank again till he came back sarcastically, Indian Post Office?? (Yeah for sure...why not...)

Ab bhi he wasn't finished...he started asking me about the boom of construction works...'ll they survive the recession n all...gave a lil speech here n there...related it like auto industry...and this that...finally he thought he has dug me in a grave deep enuff and handled me to P3 to bury me...

P3 started with my project (trust me other than IITs and NITs no other coll student actually make projects...and I'm sure prof of IIMs know that...then y pinch me??? :( )... grilled me in it, till I gave up...with again the comment...maybe the guide under whom u r doing the project has a better idea than u...else the project is impossible.. (and yes I accept the project is impossible...took too much in hand...)

And then he went to my most dreaded subject...Mathematics...(bas isi ki kami thi ab tak...)..P3 drew some graph...asked me what it was...(something discontinous and in steps...but no idea what...) tried but gave up....and then he drew another graph...guessed it right...he asked me I've made some assumption in guessing it...what were they...(pata nahi...it was a straight away graph of mod value...) ...he then changed the graph a lil...(increased the slope...) and asked what it is now...(it still is a mod graph...with some constant i believe...)...kuch kuch bola...pata nahi if he was satisfied or not....

Anyways...finally...thankfully (bhagwan ko nahi aap prof ko hi...) they were convinced that i'm burried 9 metres down he grave...and asked me to leave...(atleast jaate jaate aur coll k liye all the best keh dete...ek baar lil wali hi sahi smile to kar lete...anyways..)

So with the undisclosed numbers of call made (which i guess are atleast in tunes of 1-2 thousand) and just 60 seats (I won't bother calculating my share of general seats...) I stand absolutely no chance...case dismissed...Thats it I guess....all the best to the remaining candidates...If u know the world...u r through..else join me...

The nightmare named IIT-M interview...

Seems like, its true...Number 3 is unlucky...my third interview of life; nothing short of a disaster, and full strike on being a nightmare...the IIT Madras interview, conducted at one and only, IIT Delhi..

First thing first, IIT Delhi is much more easier to reach than IIT Roorkee, but ..and thats a big but, its again true that all good things come with an effort...IIT Roorkee looked b'ful..in sync with nature...whereas IIT Delhi looks messed up...pretty unmanaged n overlooked to be true.. Situated in the heart of city (where even a 3 bedroom flat wud cost u over a crore) it seems like turning gold into mud...well just my thoughts...

Interview slated at the time slot of 8...par koi darwaza nahi khula tha tab tak...everyone was waiting outside till around 8:20 when the rooms were opened and everyone assemebled in a lecture hall for a brief up by the professor of IIT M where he praised and applauded IIT M and its MBA course (to be true, IIT Roorkee again did this in a better way, but maybe bcoz they were in their own campus so had it much easier..)

After that the seniors took a name call to see who all are present and the GT/PI session began immediately..I was in Group one of GT...and wonder of wonders, out of the 6 members in our group, there were 3 girls (that too when in all there were 5 girls in between some 60-70 guys)..

A girl from our group was supposed to select a number from 1 to 5, she choose 3; and out topic turned out to be a sort of case study...it was "The BPO boom, and rise in salary levels of young executives have led to a lot of wealth in the hand of younger generation. This is resulting in social degeneracy of the younger generation. Mention the course of plan to counter this social degeracy" ... a min to think and jot down point, a GT of 15 min to(which cud be extended to a max of 20 min)...followed by 3 minutes to jot down summary (I'm sure v were given no more than 2 min though...inna jaldi rabb jaane maine kya likha tha...)

Khair all in all a smooth GT...we didn't have many points though...I mean what extraordinary points can one get for stopping youth degenracy...that too when u ask from a youth [:D] ..khair fromt here bak to lecture hall to wait for the turn for PI...and what a PI it was...sighs..no technical, so I should have been happy...instead it made me wish ki isse better toh technical poonch lete [:(] [:((]

Khair, an old lady (she was pretty smart and impressive, no doubts) and a young guy (probably an alumni) were there to grill me...pretty informal set up...it was some class room...they were sitting on two chairs and I was sitting facing them...no table..nothin between us [:S] ..Khair they asked with the usual about myself...and didn't stop me, till I stopped it myself...lag raha tha na, subah k ek ghante mein hi interview lete lete bore ho gaye...then Mam started asking me, y mba, d same technology and science thing...moving onto differentiate between information, knowledge and wisdom..handled them pretty well I guess...then she moved to my family, my siblings...how old are they..what are they doing and all stuff...sighs...

And then she transfered my reins to that young guy...and here starts my nightmare...he grilled me in all ways he could...shooting one question after another of general knowledge even when he came to know there is nothin general with my GK...from the secretary general of UN, to the indian member of UN, to the book by him, to head of Germany, from there to what Vikas Swarup is doing at present...and maybe I should be ashamed of myself..but I was blank...simply blank...After that agar woh mujhse mera naam bhi poonchte toh I might have not answered...

Khair after 5 min of hell, mam intervened...and said let me ask u technical since u r not comfortable with GK...and started asking my fav subjects...told her so..(par seems donon mein se kisi ko technical aata nahi tha...) she asked me what megadata is..which I corrected is metadata n briefed her a little about it...then they asked me to sell myself in one minute...(itni IDPD k baad...who 'll buy me???)...did that...I guess wrapped up in 35-40 seconds...I just wanted to flee the room to be true...khair, they finally left me after about 15 minute interview...sighs...

That round about summarises my meeting direct from hell...surely kissed IIT M a gudbye...maybe forever...pata nahi...It was good enough to make me resist ay interview coming next in my life...please bhagwaan aise izzat nahi lete chote se bacche ki....

My first encounter with the MBA GD/PI...

First GD/PI for MBA (dats after a disastrous interview around a year bak...50 min for TCS where I was tested not for intelligence but stamina I guess...I was sure I won't get the job..though miracle I did..) ...which probably the easiest too..since it wasn't technical, n thats what the trend is at IIT Roorkee...mmm not the first choice to do your MBA from, I accept..infact it was more or less like a mock trial, the first experience to me...

Landing on Delhi airport (trust me one of the scariest airport with the huge huge traffic problem) and sittin in the car from there to a non stop journey to Roorkee (oh v did hav one dinner stoppage...u can't skip meals when with parents...can u?? ) , it was tiring for sure...infact it took us about 7 gud hours to reach there (thanks to so many weddings and their baraat on highway...took abt an hour amidst the traffic jam caused due to them...guys do marry, please do...but don't block roads...)

Anyways it was over 12 when v reached roorkee...another hour more by which v checked in a guesthouse...in just 15 min to fall dead asleep(thats 8th wonder of the world for a gal who sleeps after 3 in nite usually)...

And trust me, seeing the impossible n tiring route to reach Roorkee, I was sure it would be the last place I wud want to end up at...n those were the thoughts in when I woke up next morning...lil did I know, they were soon to be changed...

The GD/PI was scheduled at half 1 in noon...me being me, n my mom being my mom, reached the venue at dot 1:30...(I just hope I wasn't the last one to reach there...sighs) Anyways got done with the registration...sat in the mail hall, listening to the presentation from seniors (they showed some slide which had lesser info than what I already knew abt IIT Roorkee n its MBA program...either they knew lil, or I had researched too much...yahooo...)...and then the HOD came (I was absent for half his speech...getting myself registered as my name was called) and that was it...

A group was called for GD/PI...rest of us were sent to some lecture theater (later told, it was where the first year classes are held) and I went in there thinking either the seniors are going to bore us wid there talk, or plain simple rag us (that too when v aren't even selected yet...that sucks...) and surprise surprise surprise...that an hour or so inside the lecture theater (from where groups n people were called from time to time for GD n PIs) turned my entire view abt IIT Roorkee....the seniors were really cool...the interation really fun n happening...and for sure they were as helpful as you can dream of...right from easing our nerves to helping us...to tell us how to handle which panel...who is sitting there...how to respond..they helped in the best way possible...a real heartfelt thanks to them for sure...

Anyways (how many times did I use anyways, anyway??) finally stepping in the GD...I was in the second last group...n just to adjust people v had 9 candidates in out group instead of usual 7...(the more the merrier...or is it???)

Anyways (again !!!) the seniors told us before hand v r more people, n more chances of it becoming a fish market...just don't argue...Stepped in the GD hall...3 co-ordinators...(staring us...oh my my was my heart beating faster....)...and they allotted us 9 minutes for the discussion, a min to think abt the topic n another minute to conclude...As for the topics, v had to choose from "Winners never quit and quitters never win" and "Politicians are not interested in disaster mitigation but relief"...We initially agreed to do it on "Winners never...." until a work ex guy stood up (I don't like him for sure...) and said, "Guys we are aiming to be managers...v need serious relevant topic not abstract one"...it was finally voted after arguments and ended up with "Politicians..." (sobs sobs...)

Anyways (sighs...) we started...a single gal in 8 guys...n the 3 co-ordinators were guys too...single gal between 11 males...oh my god..thats the bad condition of FMR...(specially in IITs)...pitched in thrice wid some points (won't appreciate or condemn them no blowing horns or hating myself) par it was all in all a fine GD...talked about Satyam, abt Tsunami, floods abt security issues, 26/11...except the guy who concluded did it the bad way...I was shocked...n was staring at the guy for a moment...common yaar if u can't conclude properly, don't jump in to try n have the last word... (Yes I'm angry for it...the bad conclusion affects the whole group...)

Anyways (kill me please...I'm just re reading what I have written...) I was ushered bak to the lecture theater where I again listened to the fun seniors...till I was called for my PI...I was 4th last in the panel, a panel famous for being good (lucky me somewhere) who as per seniors believed in giving u chances...try to select u rather than reject u...but still baba it was my first PI...I had to be tensed n worked up (thats ur duty to be...understand that)...

Another 20 minutes later I was called in the room...(Oh My God..there I was with 5 demons in front of me...my worst dreams...okie I won't even talk about my heartbeats...n this they said is the best panel in a college where u r not technically grilled...shockin..)

One lady in my left hand corner...a good aged professor besides her (my chair was between these two...n these were the two who grilled me) the third chair was empty...the next two chairs had professors in it...sipping tea n eating biscuits...(common it was me who needed energy..I barely had eaten whole day n they were feasting...life is unfair..)

Khair (what a change from Anyways !!!!)...jo hua so hua...the interview started...with the usual..something about yourself...I just mumbled the words that I'm in 4th yr Btech n have completed my education from a number of cities that those two feasting professors interfered..."Can you b a bit louder...even v have to hear.." Okie sirji...repeat kar diya...n the professor in front interfered.."why so many schools"...told abt my dad's transferable job...then what job was what the lady asked...which bank the professor asked...Nanhi si jaan was replyin all this n in between the sipping n eatin stopped (Kyun bhai..kha rahe the to khate rehte na..sawal kyun)

And there he asked me..."9.3?? Thats a pretty impressing CGPA"...Oh no...no no no...not this..please not this...don't make an exception of me n shoot technical questions to me...my mind ran at top gear...n I blurted the eternal truth..."Sir its deemed university, u get the marks easily...blah blah blah..." and then I was grilled a bit more..as to whats the usual mark one gets in my university...where do I stand in the ranks and all..managed it...(and yes they did accolade me for accepting that the marks are thanks to a private deemed university and not bragging about myself...being humble pays I guess...or does being scared pays??)

And then came the grilling on my college (why does my college needs everyone from chancellor to vice chancellor to dean from IIT) ...the panel was trying to find someone from IIT Roorkee in my college...they even took a name I didn't even recognize as dat of my VC...(ho hi nahi sakta tha..I know my VC...her daughter is in my branch...all teeth out...he is from IIT KGP waise...) so a lil bit this n that more about the college...n this is when the 3rd chair got occupied...that missing professor came (kyun bhai kyun..thodi aur bahar ki hawa kha lete...)

He just messed up my good going GD...I was just starting to relax when he unsettled me..."Computer Science and Engineering", he pondered, "So is it a dual degree...like both science and engineering" and I was staring at him...whats he upto...khair tried answering sumthin...and he increases the question..."Whats the difference in science, engineering and technology??" (do to sambhal nahi rahe the ab teen...bacche ki jaan lenge kya???) Khair...tried putting some views...failed miserably...and the last question as the nail on the coffin was..."Why is it Computer Science and Engineering whereas just Chemical Engineering"....okie that was the end of me...and the end of the interview...and my case was adjourned...

Wished them thank you...and walked out of the room...in 10-12 minute flat...and yeah I was once asked in between why MBA...pretty expected...n had some story blurted for it...thats all about it I guess...baki 'll tell u in April, if I was lucky to get through or not...Tab tak k liye..let me get tensed about the coming interviews...uff...y so many of them...sighs...Signing off....
